A Step Toward Ensuring Horse Welfare —New Tool to Measure Noseband Tightness
October 10, 2024

The FEI introduced an objective tool for measuring the tightness of nosebands at all FEI events across all disciplines. It is set to roll out during the first quarter of 2025.

In collaboration with external experts, the International Equestrian governing body (FEI) developed a device for measuring the tightness of nosebands. It will be used at all FEI events across all disciplines, and is set to gradually roll out during the first quarter of 2025. The "FEI Measuring Device" is positioned beneath the noseband, across the nasal bone, and is pulled through from top to bottom, serving as a pass-through tool. Per Article 1044.8 of the FEI Veterinary Regulations, if the device is unable to easily pass through a noseband (upper and lower), the noseband is deemed to be excessively tightened, and if discovered —

Pre-Competition: The horse and athlete combination is not allowed to start unless the noseband is re-adjusted to allow enough laxity.

During the competition, the horse and athlete combination is eliminated from the competition in question, and the athlete is issued with a yellow warning card.
